Woman Speaks Out Against Threats She’s Received After Sharing Clip of Husband Taking Care of Her Ex After His Brain Injury
A woman is speaking out after she shared a viral video of her current husband taking care of her ex-husband, whom she divorced after his traumatic brain injury.
In the initial clip, Kris Armstrong’s husband James feeds her ex-husband Brandon, and later helps him into a chair, overlaid with the text, “All that trouble just to end up with a man who loves my first husband.
So many years of giving up hope for a future for myself to end up with someone who ended up loving Brandon better than I ever could have hoped for,” Kris wrote in the caption of the TikTok post.
In 2008 — years into their marriage — their relationship was upended when Brandon was t-boned by a moving truck in an accident, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury. Two years later, Kris made the difficult decision to divorce Brandon and become his legal guardian.
When she started dating James, she was very upfront that she and her ex-husband came as a package deal, as he needed around-the-clock care. And after they wed in 2015, the Kris, Brandon and James started gaining attention online for their unconventional arrangement. As a result, they’ve opened themselves up to negativity online.
In a new video, which she posted last week, Kris addressed some of the backlash she received when she shared the video of James assisting Brandon in October.
“Unfortunately, the downside of having a viral video, especially this one for some reason, is a lot of negativity was thrown our way,” she said. “I’m fine with people being negative. It’s when people are name-calling, are threatening our family, are tearing down my character — especially because the last few weeks in our family, we having been going through a really hard time, a really, really, tough time, and the last thing I want to use my brain energy on is having to block people and go through comments and sort through all this mess.”
Negativity and ugliness breeds more and more of that, and I just can’t allow that — especially when it’s attacking me, my character, my family,” she continued. “Typically, all of the DMs I get are so loving and so supporting, and I’m not saying I should only get that — I’m fine if people don’t want to be supportive — but people have literally threatened me and would hope that horrible things would happen to me.”
Kris noted that, as a result of the negativity, she’s been “doing a lot of blocking,” describing why she felt that was the best way to handle the response.
When I block people, I look at it as a gift of love,” she said. “What you’re watching, for some reason, is making you really upset and angry, and I want to give you the gift of love that you never have to watch a video again.”
Brandon has taught us every day that life does not end when tragedy happens,” continued Kris. “We have to get creative and find ways to keep on living. Even when it doesn’t look the way we had always planned.”
