What Happens After the Death of Pope Francis — And Who Could Be the Next Pope?
When a pope dies, the Vatican follows centuries-old rituals to ensure a solemn and orderly transition. Upon the death of Pope Francis, the Camerlengo (currently Cardinal Kevin Farrell) would officially confirm his passing and oversee the sealing of the papal apartments. Nine days of mourning—known as novemdiales—would follow, during which cardinals from around the world gather in Rome.
After the mourning period, a conclave is called. Only cardinals under the age of 80 can vote, and they gather in the Sistine Chapel for secret ballots until a new pope is elected. A two-thirds majority is required, and once achieved, white smoke from the chapel’s chimney signals the world: Habemus Papam—we have a pope.
As for potential successors, names already being whispered include Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana, often seen as a strong candidate to become the first African pope in over a millennium. Others include Cardinal Matteo Zuppi of Italy, known for his diplomacy, and Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, popular for his charisma and global appeal.
The death of Pope Francis would mark the end of a progressive era—and the beginning of a new chapter in the Catholic Church’s global leadership.
