Patrick Mahomes makes things difficult for Xavier Worthy at the Kansas City Chiefs
Xavier Worthy was picked by the Chiefs as the 28th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft
The Kansas City Chiefs look to go for an unprecedented third Super Bowl in a row in 2024 and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is leaving nobody with a chance to slack off as he tells the Chiefs’ draft pick just how high the standards are.
Xavier Worthy, a 21-year-old from the Texas Longhorns program, is the latest wide receiver to join Andy Reid’s set up in Missouri after being picked 28th in the 2024 NFL Draft and there are high expectations on the man who holds the 40-yard dash record at the Combine.
With the Chiefs looking to counter the receiving options that plagued their offense through 2023/24, and with the uncertainty surrounding the future of Rashee Rice and his investigation for a crash in Dallas, it could be Worthy who is their savior and Mahomes is calling for him to hit the ground running.
“There’s no easing,” Mahomes told press, as per Charles Goldman. “He’s going to have to be ready to go. There’s a lot of competition.
“Xavier got a lot of mental work in these last few weeks he had during OTAs and minicamp, but it’s time to go now. Y’all saw Rashee (Rice) last year and the ‘throwing up days’ he had.
“We’re going to push you to the limit to get yourself ready to go for the season. That’s not just him. That’s everybody.”
Mahomes looking for a smoother year
There are high expectations on the Chiefs through 2024 as no team has ever managed to win three Super Bowls in a row, including the infamous Tom Brady-Bill Belichick combination at the New England Patriots.
But Mahomes appears to be focusing on making sure the offense is working as it should, rather than solely focusing on getting his hands on what would be the fourth ring of his career already, and he is keen to avoid the frustrations the team experienced in 2023.
“Obviously, the end result was awesome,” Mahomes said of winning the Super Bowl in February. “But I think a lot of us still have a weird feeling in our mouth. We really didn’t play football the way we wanted to play all year long. It wasn’t fun.
“Every single week, having to try to just continue to just get better and better and the results not paying off the way you want it to… We have a lot of the same guys back and they know how that feels.”
