President Trump has renewed his claims that U.S. elections are “RIGGED,” urging lawmakers to PASS strict VOTER ID laws nationwide. He argues that stronger ID rules are CRUCIAL to protect election INTEGRITY and restore public TRUST, while critics warn such measures could RESTRICT voting access for vulnerable communities.
WASHINGTON (TNND) — In a speech to House Republicans on Tuesday, President Donald Trump urged lawmakers to pass a national voter ID law ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
You want to have Voter ID. You want to insist on it. You want to insist on it,” Trump said.
Trump specifically pitched the ‘SAVE Act,’ which passed in the House in 2025 but stalled in the Senate. Legislation that would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
SAVE Act or the ‘Save America Act.’ I think we’re going to change the name a little bit. I think everyone in this room certainly should do it,” said Trump.
On social media, multiple Republican lawmakers voiced support for Trump’s comments. Including Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, who wrote, “Thank you, Mr. President! The SAVE Act will help SAVE America! Let’s get it done.”
Plus, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., wrote, “The SAVE Act ensures ONLY US CITIZENS can vote in US elections.” Meanwhile, many Democrats have long opposed the bill. Characterizing it as a voter suppression effort that would deprive millions of American citizens.
I will not let this noxious bill, the ‘SAVE Act,’ become law. Every single Senate Democrat, every single one of us is united against it. They need 60 votes. The ‘SAVE Act’ is dead on arrival,” Senate Minority leader Sen. Chuck Schumer,D-N.Y., said in April of 2025.
During his speech, Trump aimed at multiple Democratic-run states, including California, which enacted legislation banning local governments from enforcing their own voter ID requirements.
The only reason somebody doesn’t want that is because they want to cheat. Our elections are crooked as hell,” Trump said.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has challenged. Including on his podcast in 2025, asking for evidence that undocumented people were voting in the state.
What substantive evidence is there to suggest that you have any receipts to back up that all of these people are voting illegally,” Newsom said on the ‘This is Gavin Newsom’ podcast in March.
Trump also took time Tuesday to warn Republicans that he will be impeached if the party doesn’t win the midterms. Further highlighting what’s at stake come November.
You got to win the midterms. Cause if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be, they’ll just find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said.
A major challenge to California’s existing law is currently underway. The state’s voter ID initiative is close to collecting enough signatures to place a constitutional amendment on November’s ballot. If passed, IDs and proof of citizenship would be required for all in-person voting.
