Style lessons from Queen Letizia? The Princess of Asturias Awards proved that Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia have been learning from the best when it comes to royal dressing

The Princess of Asturias Awards are named in Princess Leonor of Spain’s honour, so it’s only natural that the future queen put her best foot forward to kick off the occasion on Thursday night. Joining her family, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and Infanta Sofia at the Principe Felipe Auditorium, the Princess of Asturias and her sister showcased why they are considered among the most stylish of young European royals – after all, they learnt from the best.

Indeed, with Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia standing side-by-side with their mother, it was clear that the two young women have taken sartorial inspiration from Queen Letizia herself, donning some of her favourite brands for a concert ahead of Friday’s Awards Ceremony. Princess Leonor opted for a sequined tweed jacket by Emporio Armani, a fashion house that the Queen of Spain has come to love over the years. At the beginning of October, Queen Leitiza stepped out in a floral navy blue dress by Giorgio Armani, a piece that has become a favourite of hers since she debuted it in 2023 during a World Cancer Research Day event in London.

Clearly, Letizia has passed on her admiration for Armani to Princess Leonor. Over the years, the Queen has continued to demonstrate her loyalty to Armani’s designs, wearing pieces from both the main line and Emporio Armani. Notable pieces include a long black gown worn in 2021 at a state banquet for Italian President Sergio Mattarella (showing off a keen knack for diplomatic dressing) and a white polka-dot dress donned in 2020 during her visit to El Rocío in Huelva alongside King Felipe.

And it seems that the Princess of Asturias has inherited more than good taste from her mother – she has the enviable honour of sharing a wardrobe with Queen Letizia. Leonor accessorised with a ‘90s-inspired shoulder bag from Massimo Dutti, one that she and the Queen have both been wearing since late September. To finish off her look, the heir to the throne wore her mother’s Bulgari earrings, the jewel in the crown of a touching sartorial tribute to their shared style.

Not to be outdone, Infanta Sofia also dipped into Queen Letizia’s jewellery box, wearing the Karen Hallam signature ring that her mother sported daily between 2019 and 2023. This year, however, it seems that she gifted the gold band to her younger daughter, who has been wearing it since July. Infanta Sofia wore a Hugo Boss jumpsuit for the concert, a new addition to her wardrobe, but one that bears all the hallmarks of Queen Letizia’s taste. The Spanish royal is often seen sporting the brand’s outfits, including at the Miguel de Cervantes Prize Awards in April and for National Day celebrations earlier this month.

As for Queen Letizia herself? The Queen of Spain showed why she is one of the world’s royal fashion icons on Thursday, wearing a new Carolina Herrera blouse, with crystal-embellished sleeves and a smart Peter Pan collar. Letizia paired the piece with high-waist wide-leg trousers from Sybilla and pumps from Magrit Carlota. The finishing touch: her ‘Amor Che tutto Move’ ring, which has been the staple for the Queen ever since she stopped wearing her Karen Hallam ring.

The Princess of Asturias Awards have long been a cornerstone of the Spanish royal calendar. Since 2019, Princess Leonor has made a speech during the ceremony, and it seems this year will be no different. Plus, the future queen has plenty to celebrate. Not only has she completed her intense Navy training this year, seen by many as a seminal moment as she continues to prepare to be Spain’s first queen regnant in nearly two centuries, but she also has a milestone birthday to prepare for. The Princess of Asturias turns 20 on 31 October, with Queen Letizia, King Felipe, and Infanta Sofia no doubt looking forward to marking the occasion in style – which certainly comes easily for this chicest of royal families.
