The 20-Year-Old Set to Break a 150-Year Royal Pattern

Published

For the first time in nearly 150 years, Spain is preparing for a queen in her own right — and she is just 20 years old.

Her name is Leonor, Princess of Asturias, the official heir to the Spanish throne. As the eldest daughter of Felipe VI, Leonor stands first in the line of succession. When her father eventually steps aside or passes on the crown, she is expected to become Queen of Spain.

What makes this especially historic is that Spain has not had a woman rule in her own right since Isabella II, whose reign ended in 1868. If Leonor ascends the throne, she will be the first queen regnant in roughly a century and a half.

Leonor has already started preparing for the responsibility. On her 18th birthday, she formally swore allegiance to Spain’s Constitution — an important legal milestone confirming her role as future queen. She is also completing military training in keeping with royal tradition, while continuing her studies in leadership, law, and public service.

Though she is not queen yet, her future role is clearly defined. Many view her as a symbol of a modern Spain — blending long-standing tradition with a new generation of leadership.

At only 20, Princess Leonor represents history in the making — a young woman preparing to wear a crown that has not rested on a reigning queen’s head in more than a century.
