In a distressing turn of events during the New York State Class D girls’ basketball championship on March 21, 2025, Northville High School’s head coach, Jim Zullo, was captured on video pulling the ponytail of senior player Hailey Monroe following their team’s defeat to LaFargeville. The footage, which quickly went viral, shows Monroe appearing visibly upset as Zullo yanks her hair and reprimands her. Another player attempts to intervene during the incident.
In response to the public outcry, the Northville Central School District terminated Zullo’s coaching position, labeling his behavior as “completely unacceptable.” They also assured that support would be provided to the affected players and their families.
Zullo, 81, who had come out of retirement to coach the team, expressed deep regret for his actions. He apologized to Monroe, her family, the team, and the Northville community, acknowledging his behavior was inexcusable. He explained that the altercation was provoked when Monroe used an expletive after he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team.
Local authorities and Hudson Valley Community College are currently investigating the incident. The Northville Central School District emphasized their commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring such behavior is not tolerated.
