Trump accepts ownership of the current economy: ‘I’m very proud of it’
President Donald Trump said Sunday that the U.S. is now in the “Trump economy,” publicly taking ownership of current economic conditions during a Super Bowl interview with NBC News that aired Feb. 9, 2026. The remarks matter as economic dissatisfaction remains high ahead of the November midterm elections.
“I’d say we’re there now,” Trump said. “I’m very proud of it.”
Trump argued that economic momentum has shifted under his leadership and claimed Democrats have stopped emphasizing affordability. He also blamed former President Joe Biden for persistent price pressures, saying, “I took over a mess in every way.”
The comments mark a shift from Trump’s earlier stance, when he credited himself only for positive indicators while assigning blame for weaknesses to Biden.
Recent polling shows 36 percent approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 59 percent disapprove. His claims drew scrutiny from economists and Democrats, who disputed his growth figures.
