Prince William Reveals the Funny Side of His Grandfather Prince Philip: ‘Sometimes Not Deliberately!’
My grandfather was incredibly amusing,” the Prince of Wales said with a smile
Prince William is sharing warm memories of his late grandfather, Prince Philip — and the laughter he brought to the royal family.
In a recent episode of Apple TV’s The Reluctant Traveler, the Prince of Wales opened up to host Eugene Levy about the late Duke of Edinburgh’s famously sharp (and occasionally unintentional) sense of humor, recalling how much laughter filled their family gatherings.
My grandfather was incredibly amusing,” William said with a smile. “Sometimes not deliberately, sometimes by accident!”
Levy laughed, and William continued: “But we had a lot of laughs and he had a great sense of humor, as did my grandmother as well, actually.
My grandfather definitely was the one who would create quite a few laughs,” he saId. “And it was, you know, it was happy times. There was always a warmness, there was always a laughter, there was always a family feel. And my grandparents loved having the family around them, so we were always encouraged to turn up and be around.”
When Levy asked if he could make his grandparents laugh, William replied: “Oh, yes. You had to be careful about your timing. And who it was about. So, you had to sort of pick and choose your moments to make them laugh.”
Prince Philip’s quick wit and no-nonsense humor were legendary, both inside and outside palace walls.
Upon Philip’s death in 2021 at age 99, William’s younger brother, Prince Harry, shared: “He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm — and also because you never knew what he might say next.”
